Albert Einstein is considered to be one of greatest scientists of all time. He published three papers in 1905 that were pivotal in the development of physics and Western thought. The papers discussed the quantum nature of light, provided a descriptive analysis of molecular motion, and introduced the special theory of relativity. Einstein continually reexamined traditional scientific assumptions and came to straightforward, elegant conclusions no one else had ever reached.
Isaac Newton made some of the most significant contributions to science ever made by an individual. Among his most notable achievements are his work deriving in the law of universal gravitation, his invention of calculus and his experiments investigating the nature of light and color.
Aristotle studied under the ancient Greek philosopher Plato, and shared his teacher’s reverence for human knowledge. Aristotle revised many of Plato’s ideas by emphasizing methods rooted in observation and experience. Aristotle surveyed and systematized nearly all the extant branches of knowledge and provided the first ordered accounts of biology, psychology, physics, and literary theory. Aristotle also invented the field recognized as formal logic, pioneered zoology, and focused on virtually every major philosophical problem known during his time. Medieval intellectuals referred to Aristotle as “the Philosopher,” and he is considered possibly the greatest thinker in Western history, and historically, perhaps the single greatest influence on Western intellectual development.
